Each distinct season brings new reasons to visit the Adelaide Hills. Here are our favourite ideas for enjoying the best of the region in the cooler months including the Winter Reds Cellar Door Weekend.

Fire

  • Visitors are invited to fire up their winter soul at the annual Winter Reds Cellar Door Weekend held the last weekend in July. More than 30 cellar doors offer sumptuous events day and night, serving up warm hospitality, hearty fare, hot entertainment, plenty of roaring fires and their delicious red wine by the glass.
  • Because of its close proximity to Adelaide (starting just 20 minutes from the CBD) many people choose to visit the Adelaide Hills for the day. But particularly in winter, the region is best experienced using a cosy B&B with open fire as your touring base! Curl up with a good book or laze by the fire with a glass of Adelaide Hills red in hand. Wake up to birdsong and romantic morning mists.
  • We love chocolate in the Adelaide Hills and have no shortage of chocolate experiences - from the ChocoVino wine and chocolate matching experience at Hahndorf Hill Winery to Melba's Chocolate Factory in Woodside. But in winter the chocolate is probably best enjoyed hot! Places such as Chocolate @ No.5 in Hahndorf and Red Cacao in Stirling are the perfect place to stop and warm up with a delicious hot chocolate while touring in the region.
  • When the temperature drops but the weather is dry, pull on your winter woollies and boots and head out to explore! Kids love playing in the creeks and there is still plenty of interest and colour in the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden - their spectacular camellias are a winter treat.
  • But if the rain does settle in then head for some fantastic undercover attractions - the National Motor Museum in Birdwood is a favourite, along with Melba's Chocolate Factory in Woodside.
  • At the end of the day, find a snug pub with an open fire and enjoy hearty seasonal menus with a glass of local red wine, perhaps finishing with a warming mulled wine.
  • And of course we really love it when it snows! Every now and again there is a light dusting of snow at Mount Lofty Summit, truly making the Hills Adelaide's winter wonderland...
